Awesome! Illuminae is to be made into a movie!!

Are you an Amie Kaufman fan?  How about Jay Kristoff?

Both are YA authors and come from Melbourne and just recently they published Illuminae, the first of a trilogy which has already garnered excellent reviews.

IlluminaeAnd if this isn’t exciting enough, the recently published International edition of Illuminae was listed just three weeks ago on The New York Times’ Young Adult Hardcover Bestseller list, debuting at #5.   At the time of writing this post, Illuminae has skyrocketed to #3!

Almost probably this awesome listing has been propelled by the recent announcement that Brad Pitt’s movie production company, Plan B Entertainment, makers of World War Z and Twelve Years a Slave, has teamed up with Warner Bros to bring Illuminae to the big screen.

Wow!!  Fantastic news!!

If you haven’t read Illuminae yet, it’s no surprise.  It was published just a few months ago.   Stand in line though to get your hands on the book, it’s bound to be a ‘must read’ for YA fans!

And to think … just a couple of months ago, we were lucky enough to have Amie Kaufman visit our senior campus library.  She ran one of the most awesome writing workshops I’ve ever been lucky enough to attend!  I guess she will now be in hot demand for repeat visits to schools.  Without a doubt, those schools won’t just be in Melbourne!

Congratulations to both authors for this fantastic achievement!

Book week 2015 at the GFL continued today with another great guest speaker Jacqui Grantford.  Today’s talk was entertaining and engaging for the audience with so much to cram in over a short lunch break with students and staff.  One of our participating students had his portrait painted by the artist.  Caught on Canvas.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

An illustrated children’s version of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone is due out on 6th October 2015.

Jim Kay, the 2012 Kate Greenaway medal winner for his illustrations in A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness, has created some magical illustrations.

Judging by the front cover and the first page which was revealed by The Guardian late last week, this is bound to be another best seller.

Take a peek at some of the key characters of the story on Jim Kay’s website.

Readers are winners!

James Patterson

James Patterson

Thanks to the generosity of well known author James Patterson, young adult and children visiting book shops in Australia are to be winners.

While touring Australia last week, US author James Patterson has announced he will donate $100,000 to Australian and New Zealand book shops to spend on projects to get children reading. Patterson, has run similar initiatives for booksellers in the US and the UK which have been greatly appreciated by book shop visitors.  Each book shop will be eligible to win $1000 for programs they initiate specifically for young readers.

Mentone Grammar Library Staff think this is pretty awesome!!

Visiting illustrator: Marc McBride

The 2014 Book Week Celebrations in the Gregory Fish Library involved a large number of different events and activities in which Greenways & Frogmore students participated.   A visit by Marc McBride was a highlight!

As the illustrator of the very successful Deltora Quest series, Marc McBride visited us equipped with a folio of his paintings and illustrations of dinosaurs which feature in this series of books. The 25 students who attended this session were mesmerized listening to Marc’s enthusiastic and incredibly inspiring presentation while he created, on the spot, an airbrush painting of a dinosaur. Not content with just talking, Marc encouraged the students to put pen to paper and create their own drawings of dinosaurs! Having run out of time for more, we have resolved to explore the possibility of having Marc return  again to run a longer workshop with the students.

Meantime, we are the proud owners of a dinosaur painting which will take pride of place on our walls once we frame it!

George Ivanoff Studio 3 guest appearance

Faithful followers of this blog and the goings-on in the GFL will know the name “George Ivanoff”. George was our National Year of Reading Patron in 2012, has worked with Year 9 and 10 in Writing Workshops, and often comes to school to hangout at the MGRA Meet-Ups organised by Mrs Novak.

George has his own blog here, which is where we found the link to this hilarious clip.

George was recently a guest in Studio 3, and here is a clip of him being interviewed by Liv and James. Enjoy!

And if you’d like to see George sans pies, you can watch a much more sedate version of the interview here.
