The under Age

ExpressMedia and The Age are running The under Age again in 2012.

Calling young Victorian Journalists!

Express Media, in partnership with The Age, is excited to again be calling for submissions for writers to join the team at The Under Age.

The Under Age is a fortnightly online newspaper written entirely by Victorian high school journalists. Each fortnight the group of 12 young people will workshop their story ideas with each other and also with selected industry professionals. The newspaper will include articles on news, sport, politics, art and culture.

We are looking for a group of 6 new young journalists to join The Under Age team in 2012-13. If you will be in high school in 2012 and think you’ve got what it takes, please email three things to Express Media’s Creative Producer Lefa Singleton Norton ( by 5pm Friday July 6, 2012:

  • One paragraph explaining who you are including your age and interests. We want to know what excites you.
  • One paragraph explaining why you want to be a part of The Under Age.
  • A 300 word story which is an example of what you’d like to write about if you were selected. Check out stories at for examples of categories you might be interested in writing for.

The Under Age team will meet fortnightly after school at The Age headquarters in central Melbourne from Thursday July 26. These meetings will be fully supervised and will provide young writers with a safe and nurturing environment that will encourage them to write honest, thoughtful and insightful journalistic pieces that will be published soon after.

As well as selecting 6 new young writers, we will also be publishing the top 15 stories received in the submission process in The Under Age.

For further information, please contact Lefa or on (03) 9094 7887.
